History
History
The school building was constructed in 1927 and is on the National Register of Historic Places (reference number 84000277). Shawnee High School opened in 1928 as an all-girls school. It became co-educational in 1950 and later became a magnet school with a focus on aviation. Recently, the school changed its name to The Academy @Shawnee.

Want to fly a mission to the Moon? Rendezvous with a comet? Students at The Academy @ Shawnee have a hands-on opportunity to do so right in their own facility. Nothing activates the imagination and reinforces learning like being part of a team responsible for safely landing on the Moon.

We are a district-wide Aerospace Magnet with some AMAZING STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) curriculum offerings.
We offer the nation's only FAR, Part 141 Pilot's course taught at the high school level, where students can earn their pilot's license, often before they earn their driver's license.
We offer pre-engineering classes with a focus on Aerospace through Project Lead the Way.
We offer AP courses
Our school was selected to send an experiment to the International Space Station. In addition, we also have contributed to the space shuttle Endeavor.

Honors and Awards
The Academy @ Shawnee's NJROTC unit earned the Distinguished Unit Award. This status is awarded only to those units that have demonstrated the very highest levels of performance. The Academy @ Shawnee's NJROTC unit is the only NJROTC unit in Jefferson County to receive this award for 2012-2013 school year and will retain that status for the 2013-2014 school year.

This new system of assessment follows a year of great success whereby the school made the 2nd greatest gains in proficiency increases in both reading and math. The performance earned a visit from US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and confirmed that much of the school's turnaround strategies were well-aligned. The task of the Academy is to transfer, update, and adjust those strategies to the new
